Buhari subsidises Islamic Pilgrimage at the expense of key sectors of the economy

Godwin Emefiele

The Federal Government under President Buhari keeps telling Nigerians that they should fasten their seat-belt due to dwindling oil revenue which is the mainstay of the nation’s economy. Workers’ salaries are not being paid as at when due, pensioners are dying daily from starvation, poor funding of basic infrastructures to mention but a few.

Yet in the midst scarce foreign exchange, the President has given a matching order to the CBN to subsidise Islamic Pilgrims to Saudi Arabia at a concessionary exchange rate of N197 to $1 USD, through the various commercial banks in the country. Yet students studying overseas and those travelling abroad along with some importers of essential goods and services cannot be subsidised, rather, they source for these hard currencies at a very high rate.

The directive was contained in a circular on Thursday marked TED/FEMFPC/GEN/01/005.

The CBN said that, “Each pilgrim is entitled to purchase a minimum of $750.00 and maximum of US$1,000.00 as PTA.

“The Federal Government has approved that intending pilgrims are to be sold the PTA at a concessionary exchange rate of N197.00 to the US dollar.

“No commission shall be charged by the banks for the sale of the PTA to the intending pilgrims.

“The Central Bank of Nigeria shall sale the PTA to the designated banks in Lagos and Abuja and the accounts of the respective banks shall be debited as soon as the funds are disbursed”.

For the meantime, the Naira plunged to N400 to $1 yesterday at the parallel market.

After closing at around N378 against the dollar for most part of last week, the naira dropped to 380 on Friday before falling to 382 on Monday.

The currency closed at 315.06 (official) to the United States dollar at the inter-bank market on Thursday.

From the foregoing, Nigerians and the world at large can see that this government is indeed confused and lack sense of direction. Also, one wonders what economic benefit these pilgrims will yield to the country.

At the end of the day, most of these Pilgrims will go through the back door to sell USD at the black market rate, thereby making a mockery of the anti-corruption war President Buhari claimed to the fighting and inflict more hardship on the masses.

President Buhari's government shifts blame game to the UK

PMB

The Buhari’s administration continues the blame game as it now points fingers beyond the shores of Nigeria. The recent one is made against the London Telegraph of supporting Boko Haram terrorism in Nigeria.

According to a press release by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, criticised the 30th August and 12 April publication of the newspaper on the Boko Haram insurgency and the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.

The excerpts of the statement reads: “The London Telegraph’s article ‘Children Face Death by Starvation in Northern Nigeria’ (30th July) repeats a claim from an earlier piece ‘Nigeria Using UK Aid to Persecute President’s Political Foes’ (12th April) – that Nigeria is diverting UK aid monies away from defeating the Islamist terror group Boko Haram towards those the newspaper identifies as political opponents of the Administration. This is as incorrect as it is unhelpful.

“These claims in both articles are attributed to an unnamed ‘source’ in the United States, and ‘Western officials’. Yet when the first article was published it drew the condemnation of the US Embassy in Abuja as having drawn conclusions directly opposite to the position of the US government.”

Contrary to the assertions by the report, the report pointed out that the UK government did not give development aid to the Nigerian administration for use in military operations against Boko Haram.

The Presidency, the statement said, is in no position to divert aid monies meant for emergency relief for refugees or IDP camps to any other purpose as they are dispensed directly by DFID, USAID, the United Nations, the International Red Cross, Doctors without Borders and many other organizations.

Furthermore, it said: “The humanitarian situation in these camps is real. The Administration remains deeply concerned about the medical, health and nutrition challenges and we are doing everything with the limited resources we have at our disposal to improve the situation.

“However, the blame for the plight of refugees lies with Boko Haram. They are its cause, not the Nigerian Government.

“In the light of ongoing efforts, we regret the recent attack on the UN humanitarian convoy in the North-eastern region and are encouraged by the world body’s determination to continue rendering assistance to the displaced victims.

“That the attack was repelled by Nigerian troops escorting the convoy shows precisely how the Government and humanitarian agencies are working together.” It added

The Presidency also debunked the statements which accuses the Buhari’s Administration of targeting Christians and the opposition were without substance.

Rather, the presidency claimed that ever since the current administration assumed office, President Buhari always treated all Nigerians, irrespective of their religious affiliation or tribe equally. This is despite the fact that all Nigerians from all walks of life have been accusing Buhari for his lop-sidedness in making various appointment to favour a certain section of the country without considering the aftermath effect of his actions.

It further stated: “To suggest his government as deepening Muslim-Christian division is not only untrue, but plays into the hands of Boko Haram who wish to divide Nigerians along religious lines. Fighting this group is key priority of President Buhari’s Administration.

“Indeed the international community has widely acknowledged his determination to defeat terrorism in Nigeria and the entire Lake Chad Basin.

“There is nothing to gain by attempting to mould public opinion against these facts. Therefore we invite The Telegraph to visit Nigeria: to witness first hand not only the challenges we face, but the Administration’s determination to confront them,” It stated.

The present dialogue between the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, and the Federal Government targeted at bringing an end to militancy in the Niger Delta region have accomplished sweeping bargains.

The shared view so far achieved in the negotiation, occurring through oil companies and security offices, incorporates the arrival of previous aggressor pioneer, Henry Okah, in jail in South Africa and Charles Okah, held in Nigeria.

It was additionally concurred that the ex-MEND officer, Government Ekpemupolo, otherwise known as Tompolo, won't be captured or threatened by government in the event that he appears as a representative on MEND Aaron Team 2, while the previous leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, and those kept with him would be discharged on condition that they deny the unsettling for the Republic of Biafra.

In an announcement released on Saturday by its representative, Jomo Gbomo, MEND declared different achievements in the talks that it said will soon end the disturbances in the South-South and South-East districts of the nation. It however brought up that there is still space for the steady Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, to grasp peace falling flat which a mix of military strengths and volunteers in the district would angle them out.

The announcement reads, “The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) is the only militant group from the Niger Delta region who are presently engaged in a dialogue with the Federal Government of Nigeria – through oil companies and security agencies -with a view to resolving the current Niger Delta crisis.”

“Thus far, the deliberations have been fruitful, various concessions and guarantees have already been secured. Some of which include, but are not limited to: Release of Henry Okah, Charles Okah and Obi Nwabueze; Review of the life sentence handed to Mr. Edmund Ebiware based on a proposal put forward by the Aaron Team representative for Abia and Imo states, Senator Adolphus Wabara.

“Also, conditional release of IPOB leader, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu and others if they renounce their agitation for a “Biafra Republic,” the group said.

MEND further uncovered that it was concurred that: “That Mr. Government Ekpemupolo shall not be arrested, harassed and/or intimidated whenever he makes himself available as a delegate of the MEND Aaron Team.”

The announcement reads, “That international arbitrator and conflict negotiator, American Dr. Judith Asuni shall be accepted as the representative of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) on the MEND Aaron Team; that the criminal charges against Urhobo freedom fighter, Mr. Kelvin Prosper Oniarah shall be reviewed.

“That the life sentence which was handed to seven soldiers in 2008, who actively supported the Niger Delta struggle be reviewed under the Presidential Amnesty Programme. The affected persons are: Suleiman Alabi Akubo, Major. Mathias Peter, SGT, Alexander Davou, L.Cpl., Moses Nwaigwe, L.Cpl., Nnandi Anene, L.Cpl. Taatihi Emmanuel, L.Cpl and Caleb Bawa, PTE,” it said. . “However, one of the most immediate and urgent fallout of the ongoing dialogue is the imperative for the Federal Government and MEND to jointly and separately take proactive steps to rescue and secure the region. This is in the event that the recalcitrant Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) continuing on its senseless and politically-motivated path of attacks on the country’s oil assets,” it noted.

“To this end, both parties agreed that the Special Forces of the Nigerian Army should commence the purely routine but strategic military exercise code-named “Operation Crocodile Tears”; while MEND would commence a meet-the Government-Actors-and-People tour of the Niger Delta region code-named “Operation Moses,” MEND stated.

Drama as the Nigerian Police Charge a 6-Year old boy for murder In Enugu

Nigerian Police

Nigerians from all walks of life have publicly condemned the decision of the Nigerian Police, Enugu State command for arresting and charging a six-year-old boy, whose name is given as Chibuike Oramalu for murder.

According to sources, the little boy was kept under detention for about a month. Though he was later released after the news went viral and was condemned by the public. When contacted, the Police said he was not arrested but put under “protective custody”.

The case took a different twist, when the boy was arraigned for the alleged offence, after the Police Commissioner in Enugu State, Emmanuel Ojukwu promised that because the suspect is a minor in the eyes of the law, he would not be charged for the offence.

According to the Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network (CRRAN), which has been showing interest in the case to ensure that the little boy is freed, has expressed their disappointment over the actions of the Police.  Thus, have written a petition to the Police Service Commission to bring all the perpetrators of the wicked act to book.
Mr. Olu Omotayo who is the President of the rights group said: “We write to you in respect of the above-mentioned, which had earlier commanded your attention vide several petitions sent to you at the inception of this matter.

“We started the massive campaign for the release of Chibuike Oramalu on Saturday the 9th day of July 2016. The 6 year old was taken into custody at the State Criminal and Investigation Department (State CID), Police Headquarters, Enugu, on the 30th May 2016 and was finally released on the 13th July 2016.

“During the unlawful 6 weeks sojourn of Chibuike Oramalu, in Police cell at the State CID, Enugu, the Police Commissioner had maintained that Chibuike was in ‘protective custody.’

“The case took another dimension this morning when the Police called Mrs. Oramalu that she should bring Chibuike to the Police Headquarters. Mrs. Oramalu went there with Chibuiike and Police proceeded to Magistrates’ Court with Chibuike and Edwin Oforma, the owner of the said gun who had earlier reported to the Police.

“At the Magistrates’ Court, Police filed a Charge of Conspiracy and murder against Chibuike and Edwin Oforma. Oforma was also charged with unlawful possession of a Zebra English made double barrel gun.

“Chibuikes’ mother informed us as they were being taken court and we promptly made appearance in court on behalf of the 6 year old boy Chibuike Oramalu.

“The Learned Magistrates’ His Worship Hillary Asogwa, after listening to our submission agreed that the 6 year old boy is incapable of committing crime and as such he could not be remanded in prison custody.

“The learned Magistrate, therefore, released Chibuike Oramalu on bond to the mother but went ahead to remand Mr. Edwin Oforma in prison for murder and unlawful possession of double barrel gun. We attached herewith the said Charge Sheet.

“We salute the courage and wisdom of His Worship Hillary Asogwa in this matter and we know that with likes of him on the bench there is greater hope for the judiciary in this country.”

Omotayo further stressed that “Chibuike Miracle Oramalu, a primary 2 pupil of Carmelite Nursery and Primary School, Nike Avenue, G.R.A. Enugu, was taken into custody at the State Criminal and Investigation Department (State CID), Police Headquarters, Enugu, on Monday, the 30th day of May 2016.

“The incident that led to Chibuike arrest and detention happened on the 29th day of May 2016 at their residence No.5/7, Robito Cresent, Independence Layout, behind Government House, Enugu, where Mrs. Nwakaego Oramalu works as a cleaner and house keeper.

“On Sunday the 29th May 2016, while Mrs. Nwakaego was away to Adoration Ministries for the church Sunday service, the son of her employer, Chukwunanu Oforma, a National Youth Corps member asked the little Chibuike and his 10 year old elder brother named Ifeanyichukwu Oramalu to clean and tidy up his fathers’ room (Mr. Edwin Oformas’ room).

“While the two children were cleaning up the room, Ifeanyichukwu was sweeping while Chibuike was laying the bed. Chibuike saw a gun near the bed and carried it; he showed the gun to the brother Ifeanyichukwu who asked him to return the gun.

“While Chibuike was returning the gun he mistakenly pulled the trigger and a shot went off, shattered the glass window of the room, pierced the wall of the next building passed out on the other side and went and hit a 12 year old boy named Oluebube Boniface on the chest. Oluebube died instantly.”

In his petition, he emphasised “that the arraignment of the 6-year-old Chibuike today for murder by the Police is a mockery and abuse of administration of justice in this country.

“The question is why are the officers handling this matter bent on sending the 6 year old to prison either by whatever crook means. The Police Service Commission has to live up to his responsibility and save the Nigeria Police and the country in general from this type of embarrassment.

“We also appeal to kind hearted Nigerians to help the mother of Chibuike whose house cleaning job has already been terminated by this incident and she has also lost the benefit of the accommodation given to her by her former employer.

“We also appeal to kind hearted Nigerians to assist the family of Ukwa Boniface with fund to pay for the post-mortem as requested by the Police and the burial of their 12 year old son, Oluebube Boniface, who died in the incident. The deceased was also a primary school pupil, while the father is a poor commercial tricycle operator.”

Nigerian Army unveils 'Exercise Crocodile Smile' against Niger Delta Militants

Army in the creeks

In a bid to curb the activities of militancy in the South, and Niger Delta in particular, the Nigerian Army recently declared that it has launched tactical drills in Enugu State which will commence this weekend.

The army code-named the drill as ‘Exercise Crocodile Smile’ which according to sources is targeted at preparing the Amphibious and Internal Security Operations in the region.

This strategic exercise is coming up as a result of the warning issued by the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, where he said, henceforth, the military would apply force against the Niger Delta militants, unless they embrace peace and dialogue with the Federal Government.

It was further said that, “Government is still committed to dialogue and whereby this cannot go on, then, there could be resort to other means. The non-kinetic (force) means has always been the source first before government can make recourse to the kinetic means.

“So, there is need for the Niger Delta Avengers to see reason and engage in dialogue with government.”

This is the content of the post obtained from the social media page of the Army, “The Nigerian Army will from this weekend commence another training exercise code named ‘EXERCISE CROCODILE SMILE’ in 82 Division and part of 2 Division areas of responsibility traversing the South-South geo-political region.

“The aim of the exercise is to practice our Special Forces and other units of the Nigerian Army in Amphibious and Internal Security Operations in riverine environment and also check criminal activities like kidnapping, militancy and piracy and other forms of criminal activities in support of the civil authority.

“The general public is please requested not to panic on the sight of unusual movement of large number of troops, heavy military weapons and equipment in these areas.”

Buhari's plot against Saraki revealed during Obasanjo's visit

Obasanjo and Buhari

It is a popular saying that he who goes to equity must come with equity. Virtually every Nigerian knows how corruption was promoted during the era of former President Obasanjo, in his desperate move to cling unto power for a second term and the carry-go slogan that followed it, and worst of it all, his selfish third term ambition that made money to be share daily in Ghana-must-go bag.

Also, could it be the fear of being prosecuted by Buhari that quickly made him to identify with him and gave him all support at the dying minute? perhaps, to keep memory of such dying minute support alive, may be responsible for his continuous visit to the Presidential Villa.

Lately, Obasanjo visited President Buhari at the Villa, which according to anonymous sources was centred on plans on how the President could wipe out 'corrupt elements' in the National Assembly.

According Obasanjo, as reported by SaharaReporters, with the likes of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, at the National Assembly, Buhari’s anti-graft war cannot achieved the desired result.

According to a presidential source, Obasanjo told Buhari to spend more than what Saraki is spending if he really wants to kick him out of the National Assembly.

The President, while responding to Obasanjo, repeated his determination to ensure all corrupt National Assembly members face prosecution.

However, he lamented the level of compromise in the judiciary, and gave some examples to that effect.

Furthermore, it was revealed by sources in the Presidency that, what is making the president uncomfortable may not be corruption as claimed, but Saraki’s ambition of eyeing the number one seat. Thus, he has vowed to bring him down at all cost.

Therefore, the questions concerned Nigerians keep asking is, Obasanjo who is popularly called the father of corruption now a saint, or is it a pot calling kettle black?

BREAKING: Over six policemen killed in Lagos as militants invade Adaxson area

Militants kill six policemen in Lagos

All regions in Nigeria are beginning to have a feel of the evil seed of corruption and insincerity sowed by our past leaders towards the younger generation as Militancy in the Niger Delta is gradually spreading like a wild fire to the South-West. The oil and gas companies on their part have also failed the people for not taking their corporate social responsibilities seriously by meaningfully engaging the youths of the region, as it is done in civilised society where similar resources are found.

BUHARI DRAWS THE BATTLE LINE: AS HE CHALLENGES IBB AND GUSAU TO OPEN UP

Buhari dares IBB
It is a popular saying in natural justice that “it is not a crime for a gang member to rob from an outsider, but a crime for a member of the gang to rob his fellow gang member.

Politics in Nigeria is always centred on the military (serving or retired).

Thus, one may say that perhaps the President Buhari led government may be biting more than it can shew, as some people say, that the likes of IBB and OBJ to mention but a few are all members of the same cabal that are hugely responsible for the backwardness of Nigeria.

Their fraternisation may be responsible for the current administration inability to look into the Haliburton bribery scandal as it may be seen as a crime against their common goal as a cabal holding this nation to ransom.

However, President Buhari, may be heading towards a serious and prolonged war with the General and his loyalist in the coming days as he recently challenged IBB and Gusau after 31 years of military coup which toppled his government then.

According to President Buhari during an private interview with The Interview, he said that it was because of his desire and readiness to probe the army hierarchy of corrupt practices that led to the coup. He further stressed that senior military leaders, led by former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida and General Aliyu Gusau, removed him in August 1985, to save themselves from his wrath.

In the interview, President Buhari gave IBB and Gusau the punch by challenging them to tell the world the truth of the coup that led to his forceful removal from office as a military Head of States.

“I learnt,” he said, “that Aliyu Gusau, who was in charge of intelligence, took import licence from the ministry of commerce which was in charge of supplies and gave it to Alhaji Mai Deribe.

“It was worth N100,000, a lot of money at that time. I confronted them and took the case to the Army council in a memo…I wanted Gusau punished.”

In a statement on www: theinterview.com.ng, the Managing Director/Editor-in-chief of The Interview, Azu Ishiekwene, said, “This is one edition that won’t let sleeping dogs lie.”

However, General Babangida (rtd.) had debunked the report in one of the magazine’s edition last December saying that there was actually nothing in the memo written by Buhari that was submitted to The Army council.

IBB said: “Don’t forget that I was one of Buhari’s closest aides. I was the chief of army staff. So, I had an important position, an important role to play within that administration. I don’t think it had to do with a memo.”

2019, DELE MOMODU KNOCKS PRESIDENT BUHARI AS HE PREDICTS VICTORY FOR THE PDP

Buhari

Dele Momodu, a top member of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) and Publisher of Ovation Magazine had revealed five elementary behaviours false praise singers around the President have refused to tell him, which has the capacity to truncate his 2019 presidential ambition.

According to an article captioned “what they won’t tell the President”, which was published today, 16 July 2016. The Publisher also lashed Mr. Femi Adesina who is the President’s spokeman.

According to Adesina, majority of Nigerians are happy with the President’s performance, apart from those nicknamed “wailing wailers”, who are mourning.

The Publisher highlighted the following fears:

1. Slow Pace of Work

Nigerians are complaining about the slow pace of work. They want Baba to jazz things up. Not that they expect him to do it all, but they are hoping he can rejig this government and bring in proven and tested Nigerians from any part of the world and whatever political or religious background. It is the prerogative of every government to hone its engine of governance regularly by discarding worn-out batteries, plugs and pumps. You may need to flush dirty engine oil and replace with premium lubricant. It should be obvious that what we have at the moment is far short of the speed and stamina required to take Nigeria to the next level.

2. Northernization of Nigeria

Nigerians are complaining about the seeming Nothernisation of the key sectors of the Nigerian economy and polity. I am personally not very worried about ethnic sentiments as a completely detribalized Nigerian, but there are those who feel very strongly about this and the President may need to allay their reasonable fears of being extinguished and exterminated from the national politics of Nigeria. My honest suggestion is that Baba should come out to tell Nigerians the criteria he uses in arriving at his choices. He should confront his critics with superior logic and the mathematics of appointment distribution.

3. High Cost of Governance

Nigerians are complaining about the high cost of governance especially in this era of dwindling national fortunes. Many are telling us that we persuaded them to vote APC, because we flaunted the credentials of Buhari as a frugal and simple man not susceptible to frivolous spending or profligacy. They are taunting us that they have seen no evidence of the reduction in the extravagant spending on presidential jets and the upkeep of government personnel and their families.

4. Directionless Economy

Nigerians are wondering what direction the economy is headed with the incessant free-fall of the naira despite all efforts at arresting the kamikaze plunge. Added to this is the deregulation of the price of petrol and the pains being felt by these twin policies can only be described as untold hardship.

While Nigerians are highly impressed that Baba is fighting looters to standstill, they want to know what is happening to all the humongous cash already recovered. Many States are still in financial mess, unable to pay their workers.

5. Agitation for Nigeria’s Break up

Nigerians are also talking about the spate of agitations for the breakup of the Nigerian State, especially the renewed call by the pro-Biafra groups of South East Nigeria to carve out an Igbo nation.
