Team Nigeria managed to take delivery of their long awaited
Olympic kits, just 3 days to the end of the 2016 Summer Olympics, after most of
the nation’s athletes had already concluded their events, while some had gone
back to their various bases. Thus, the kits will no longer serve their purpose,
as tax payers money has been wasted on them already.
According to a source from the Athletics Federation of
Nigeria: “I have never experienced this in my years in sports. Money meant for
the Games was held tightly by ministry officials and they were just releasing
money piecemeal. We had to buy kits on our own while some athletes competed in
their personal kits.”
One could recall how Team Nigeria participated in the match
past with their warm-up track suits, during the opening ceremony, as according
to the Ministry of Sports, the official uniform could not arrive on time for
the ceremony.
This act of gross negligence which resulted into an
embarrassing situation has attracted a lot of condemnation from Nigerians within
and outside the country. As if that was not enough, the so called sports
minister in the person of Solomon Dalung, defended his wolf failure in his
saying that even South African representatives at the Olympics appeared in their
track suits at the opening ceremony.
One then ask, why do our public office holders always degrade
themselves by swiftly using failed scenarios from other countries who are even
better than them in so many instances to justify their incompetence, but will
never emulate the areas of success of same countries to improve on themselves?
