Is Scotland really ready to break-away from the UK?

Scotland First Minister

Recent surveys seem to have revealed that despite the fact that over 60% of Scots voted to remain the EU, majority of the Scottish people do not want to exit the UK, as Nicola Sturgeon gears up preparation for a second independence referendum due to Theresa May’s hard Brexit stand.

Immediately after the June 23 EU referendum last year, Scotland First Minister Nicola Sturgeon declared the possibility of a second indyref for Scotland, should the UK government forcefully take Scotland out the EU single market.

According to sources, Whitehall was already putting contingency plans in together, to mitigate any eventuality should Sturgeon makes a strong demand for a Scottish independence during the SNP’s conference coming up mid-March 2017.

Unfortunately, issues of referendum is said to be exclusively the ambit of Westminster, therefore, any region may call for one, but it is left for the PM to accept or reject such a call.

On the other hand, if the Scottish people make a strong case for a second independence referendum, due to their desire to remain in the EU single market, the UK may experience serious constitutional crisis, if the PM refuses to listen to such a call.

Moreover, the SNP faces some kind of challenges as all surveys carried out recently indicates that the Scottish people do not want any indyref, even though, during the EU referendum a “Yes” vote increased.

Other surveys carried out over the past 8 months also indicate that a second indyref is not being welcomed by the Scottish people.
