ARTICLE 50: Scotland may join campaigners when it goes to the Supreme Court - Nicola Sturgeon

Scotland to join campaingers
Strong indications have emerged that Scotland may also join the Brexit court fight to ensure Theresa May does not win back the ability to trigger Article 50, Nicola Sturgeon has said. This decision may not be unconnected to the High Court ruling which ruled against the PM’s decision to trigger Article 50 without the involvement of the parliament.

The First Minister says that Holyrood could join specialist Gina Miller and beautician Deir Dos Santos as "participants in the case" when it goes to the Supreme Court toward the beginning of December.

Campaigners were on Thursday morning given triumph by a High Court ruling who said the Prime Minister did not have the privilege to set in movement the official notice of separation from the European Union without consulting parliament.

Ms Sturgeon said: "We'll be looking at the judgment very carefully and yes we will actively consider whether or not there is a case for the Scottish government to become participants in that case."

According to the irst Minister the ruling was "hugely significant and underlines the chaos and confusion at the heart of the UK government".

She included: "We should remember that their refusal to allow a vote in the House of Commons is not because of some matter of high constitutional principle, it is because they don't have a coherent position and they know that if they take their case to the (chamber) that will be exposed."

She said that the 54 SNP MPs would "certainly not vote for anything that undermines the will or the interests of the Scottish people".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the his party regarded the choice made in the referendum however clarified that MPs would need to see Mrs May's arranging terms first.

He said: "This ruling underlines the need for the Government to bring its negotiating terms to Parliament without delay.

"Labour respects the decision of the British people to leave the European Union. But there must be transparency and accountability to parliament on the terms of Brexit."

Toward the end of a late Brexit summit meeting with Mrs May, Ms Sturgeon said she was no clearer on the Prime Minister's technique for leaving the EU than she was toward the start.

She said there had been a "frank exchange" at the meeting however she had discovered it "deeply frustrating".

Ms Sturgeon said: "I don't know any more now about the UK Government's approach to the negotiations than before I went into the meeting."

one of world richest black woman - Folorunso Alakija explains why she did not go to university

Folorunsho Alakija

If attaining a university degree automatically makes one rich, the world would have been full of too many billionaires, but research has shown that most university degree holders cannot even comfortably say they are millionaires not to talk of being billionaires.

A Nigerian billionaire and business mogul Folorunso Alakija finally reveals her reason for not going to the university. She stated that going to the university was never part of destiny, yet she has been able to attain her aspirations without any university degree. And today she is one world richest black woman.

She said this on Thursday at the Excellence in Leadership program, which is organised yearly by Daystar Christian Centre, Ikeja, Lagos.

The founder of Rose of Sharon motivated the audience by saying that she never allowed a lack of university education to suppress her dreams and ambition.

“If I had the opportunity of going to the university, maybe I would have come out with a second class upper or lower but that didn’t happen; that wasn’t to be my destiny,” she said.

“I would have loved to go to the university as we all know that university education is good but some of us who have not gone, it is not the end of the world”, she added.

Alakija to the audience that it was determination and hard work that helped her to climbed the success leather, as she was ever ready to pay the price of being where she is today.

“Having put my foot in the door, I decided I was not going to turn back”, she noted, revealing that when she had to file a lawsuit against the federal government for taking 50 out of her 60 percent equity, she remained determined. Though it took her 12 years to bring the case to conclusion, determination and patience helped her at the end

The oil magnate noted that she is a product of hard work, sweat, tears, and tenacity, stressing that she’s not an overnight success.

“A lot of things have been said about me, some say I sold my way to the top; I remember that the headline of one of the national dailies in the country once said ‘Hairdresser given an oil block’. So I even became a hairdresser, one of the many names I was given”, she said.

Amaechi accused of stealing N235m given ministerial appointment, while Reuben Abati is being jailed for allegedly stealing N50m

Amaechi and Abati

fighting corruption is a welcome idea, but people begin to ask questions when the fight against corruption is lopsided and certain people being targeted for being in the opposition.

Again the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been criticised in strong terms for jailing Reuben Abati who was accused of stealing N50m, while Rotimi Amaechi who is also accused of stealing N235m is given a ministerial appointment by the Buhari led administration.

The latest criticism is coming from an ex-special assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan on new media, Reno Omokri, as he is surprised why Amaechi who is being accused from almost every quarter is given such an exalted position and allowed to walk freely on the street.

“Reuben Abati allegedly got ₦50 million from Dasuki and goes to jail. Rotimi Amaechi admittedly spends $500k (₦235 million at today’s rate) on a one day dinner for Soyinka and becomes a minister! Welcome to the new Nigeria!” He said through a tweet on his Twitter timeline.

Furthermore, he posted on his social media handle, saying, “With all due respect, Kemi Adeosun cannot be able to pullout the economic magic that Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala will pullout.

“For example, the President took about six months to set a cabinet after which he replaced Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala with Kemi Adeosun who has a bachelor degree in economics from the University of East London. I schooled in London and I know that the University is not a really well ranked university.

“Moreso, this is someone who has just a degree in economics and post graduate diploma which is not as high as bachelors.

“Now you had someone who has a PHD in regional and economic development and worked as a Managing Director at the World Bank and also a former Minister of Finance replaced by Kemi who I have nothing against; in a difficult period like this, you need to put your best hands.‎”

BREAKING: High Court rule against British government article 50 battle

High Court ruling on Article 50

Jubilation as the High Court rules that Parliament must vote on whether the UK can begin the way toward leaving the European Union. This implies the administration can't trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty - starting formal talks with the EU - all alone.

Earlier on, Theresa May said the EU referendum - and existing ministerial powers - mean MPs don't have to vote, yet campaigners called this illegal.

However, the government has said, it is going to appeal the High Court ruling at the Supreme Court.

Ministers were given the thumbs up for a further hearing to occur at the Supreme Court, which is required to happen before the end of the year.

The Theresa May has said she will enact Article 50, formally telling the EU of the UK's aim to leave, before the end of next March. This takes after the UK's choice to back Brexit in June's referendum by an edge of 51.9% to 48.1%.

The EU's other 27 member countries have said arrangements regards to the terms of the UK's exit cannot start until Article 50 has been summoned.

Gina Miller, who brought the case, said outside the High Court that the government ought to make the "wise decision of not appealing".

BBC aide political editorial manager Norman Smith said, if the court's ruling was not upset, there could be "months and months" of parliamentary obstacles ahead.

There should have been "clarity" on whether there would be a "short, sharp" vote or Parliament would need to consider complex enactment, he included.

In any case, he said most MPs would be probably going to vote in favour of Article 50, as Brexit had been upheld by a lion's share of voters in the choice.

Proliferation of Private Universities on the increase, while public universities are dying daily

National Universities Commission

Recall the 80s and early 90s when private individuals started the proliferation of private primary and secondary schools across the country, which led to the death of public primary and secondary schools, because anybody who managed to get to the echelon of power was so eager to make quick money by establishing their own private primary and secondary schools.

The same is beginning to apply to the nation’s tertiary institutions, as most corrupt politicians have seen it as a money spinner after looting tax payers’ money while in office.

Report has it that, government, on Wednesday endorsed the take-off of eight new private universities across the nation, while our public universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education are collapsing daily due to lack of attention and adequate funding by these cabals. It was during the Federal Executive Council (FEC), that the decision was made. The FEC meeting was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

After the meeting, the Minister of State for Education, Professor Anthony Anwuka made the decision public through journalists.

Anwuka recorded the new Universities to include: Anchor University, Ayobo, Lagos claimed by Deeper Christian Life Ministry; Arthur Jarvis University, Akpabuyo, Cross River built by the Clitter House Nigeria Limited; Clifford University, Owerrinta, Abia possessed by Seventh Day Adventist Church; Coal City University, Enugu worked by African Thinkers Community of Inquiry College of Education, Enugu.

Others are: Crown-Hill University, Eiyenkorin, Kwara skimmed by Modern Morgy and Sons Limited; Dominican University, Ibadan, the brainchild of Order of Preachers, Nigerian Dominican Community; Kola Daisi University, Ibadan originated from Kola Daisi Foundation; Legacy University, Okija, a thought of The Good Idea Education Foundation

Senate to suspend plenary if Rivers State re-run elections are not concluded by INEC

Senate to suspend plenary over Rivers re-run

The Nigerian Senate has at last given the National Electoral Commission (INEC) till December 10 to conduct all pending National Assembly elections in Rivers.

It was further learnt that the Senate threatened to interrupt its plenary unless the electoral body conduct the aforementioned elections in Rivers State. Has the state has been denied representatives in the national assembly for a long time, and is unconstitutional for a state to be deprived such right as being enshrined in the constitution.

Motion which was brought up by the Deputy President of the Senate, Mr. Ike Ekwerenmadu, and co-sponsored by Leader of the Senate, Alhaji Ali Ndume, was unanimously adopted by the lawmakers.

Stirring the motion, Ekweremadu stressed that in spite of the resolve of the senate on September 27 urging INEC to conduct the elections, “the commission refused to oblige”.

He said, “lNEC has failed, refused and or neglected to conduct re-run elections in Rivers, into the Senate, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly.

“The failure of lNEC to conduct the re-run elections in Rivers within the time-frame ordered by the respective election petition tribunals/courts is in breach of the Electoral Act and Section 76 of the 1999 Constitution, thus endangering the nation’s democracy.

“Non-representation of the entire people of Rivers in the Senate and some constituencies in the House of Representatives and House of Assembly is in breach of Section 14 (2) (c) of the 1999 Constitution, and endangers peace and order in the state.

“Failure of lNEC to conduct election in Rivers has continued to deny the people of the state their constitutionally guaranteed rights to be represented in the legislative houses.

“lNEC had successfully conducted elections in the North-East of Nigeria, especially in the areas around Sambisa Forest in spite of the area having been acknowledged worldwide to be ravaged by terrorist activities.

“Elections were held in Bayelsa in spite of government acknowledged threat of militant activities that necessitated provision of additional security personnel in the state for the elections.”

He further expressed his displeasure saying that the Commission has no justifiable reason not to have conducted the elections and admonished his fellow lawmakers to support the motion.

Similarly, Ndume said that it was unfair that Rivers had no representation in the Senate. This is because, it will unjust for the Senate to deliberate on the Petroleum Industry Bill without a representation from the state.

He said, “If it is our colleagues from Rivers today, it could be you any day.

“You can imagine if because of insurgency elections were not conducted, I will not be here, let alone being the Senate Leader.

“How would it be for my people who are ravaged by insurgency not to have somebody to tell you people or my colleagues what is actually on ground?

“Just imagine the motions we raised that led to the passage of the bill on the North-East Development Commission, how would I have proposed it?”

Ndume said that the new leadership in INEC had a lot to do in the area of conducting successful election.

He said, “We have a new leadership in INEC, and we know the history now – inconclusive, suspension and confusion; and we have to do something.

“Very soon, we will be preparing for general elections. If we cannot conduct one election in Rivers, how do we conduct the general election?

“I know there are problems in Rivers but elections must hold. The voice should come out from here; it is better to take a wrong decision than not to take a decision at all.”

Also supporting, Sen. Matthew Uroghide stated that the non-representation of Rivers in the Senate was an inhumane treatment to the people of the state.

“There is no way we can perpetrate inhuman treatment to a people than what INEC is doing in Rivers.

“It is inhuman and the National Assembly cannot sit and have this country tolerate this treatment; I support this motion, INEC should be called to order.

“This is no time for favouritism, so, I ask that INEC be called to conduct the election. I believe one month is too much.”
