They said that men of integrity are always bound by their
words, but in today’s world, people like Wole Soyinka cannot be counted as one
of such men. The Wole Soyinka I knew during my secondary school days in literature class is no
more the Soyinka of today, ever since he started fraternizing with some sort of
ethno-religious bigots.
as a result of how him and some of his allies together with
President Barack Obama in an effort to frustrate former president Goodluck
Jonathan from his presidential ambition, he has been talking off-point in so
many national issues, and sometimes contradicting himself like the Chameleon
that changes colour to suit its immediate environment.
The latest of one of such deceit was when he said, if Donald
Trump wins the US election, he will cut his green card.
But amazingly beyond his imagination the Almighty God has
disproved him and all his allies and today Donald Trump has won.
Rather than cutting his green card as announced, he is now
saying that he will not destroy his United States residency permit just yet; rather,
he has now changed the topic to Boko haram issues with regards to the US
support for Africa against insurgency. Now the question is, did he give any
condition for the cutting of his green card when the noise was made in the
media? If no, then let him be man enough to show the world that he is indeed a
man of his word.
after the announcement of Trump’s presidential victory,
Nigerians took to social media to question Soyinka about whether he would
honour his pledge.
In response, the report quoted Soyinka as saying that he is
biding his time until Trump is inaugurated in January before deciding on his
next steps. But when he made the pledge he never said until after the
inauguration. As if that that excuse was not enough, he went further to say that
it is then he will decide the next action to take. The question being asked is,
does he need any special whatever to cut his residence permit? It’s just for
him to take the least scissors and shred it that’s all.
“Why don’t we wait until Trump actually takes office? I am
just going about my normal commitments, but definitely not getting into any
more commitments. Let’s put it that way for now,” he said.
