When Maryam Abacha, wife of former Military Dictator, Late General Sani Abacha told newsmen some years ago that no matter how much the Nigerian government recovers from their loot, She can never be as poor as Alhaji Dangote, who happens to be the richest black man in the world, most people wondered if such comment was a mere media noise.
But as time progresses, it is becoming obvious that such statement
was not just like one of those empty noise some persons make in the media to
attract attention, but a serious one that was actually meant by the Abacha’s
family, even though, it is a known fact that Dangote is not poor.
More so, the recent agreement signed by Switzerland and Nigeria
concerning the repatriation of $321 million which is a fragment of the money
looted and domiciled in Swiss bank by the late maximum dictator can attest to
that.
In the past, the Swiss government had sent back $722m to the
Nigeria government in 2005.
According to the Abassador, the MoU will help remove all the
legal bottlenecks in the fund repatriation.
This was made know by the envoy during the signing of MoU on
Mutual Legal Assistance on criminal matters, between the Swiss government and
the Federal Government in Abuja.
Mayoraz noted that Friday’s event is significant in the
sense that it would eradicate every bottlenecks associated with the
repatriation of stolen funds kept in his country.
He further stated that “Our countries enjoy excellent
relations and we cooperate as partners in many fields, particularly on the
return of looted assets, migration, human rights, humanitarian assistance and
many others.
“Today, we decide to take this cooperation forward to deepen
it in the field of judicial cooperation. By signing a Memorandum of
Understanding in this important area, our two states further strengthen their
ties of friendship and cooperation.”
