BREAKING NEWS: Court sacks Modu Sheriff as PDP chairman

Sheriff, factional PDP Chairman

An Abuja High Court has announced as "null and void" the procedure that created a previous Borno State senator, Ali Modu Sheriff, as chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The judge, Valentine Ashi, blamed the corrected PDP Constitution in 2014, which prompted the rise of Mr. Sheriff as the chairman of the party, after the abdication of previous Bauchi State governor, Adamu Muazu.

The correction had zoned the office of the national chairman of the party toward the North-East.

In his decision on Wednesday, Mr. Ashi said the change was an infringement of the Electoral Act and portrayed the activities of the PDP leaders who shared in the revision as illicit.

Mr. Sheriff has been held in a fight with Ahmed Makarfi, a previous governor of Kaduna State, for the chairmanship position of the party.

Mr. Makarfi was made the chairman of a caretaker committee, upheld by state governors and national officials.

Mr. Sheriff had won more backing as of late, and had rejected Edo State governorship race primaries led by the Makarfi-group.
