Three Niger Delta former militants graduates with first class honours from British Universities

Ex-militants bag first class

It is now obvious that most of the youths involved in militancy in the Niger Delta are not dummies as some people claimed, rather they are people with high intellectual potentials. Most of them resorted into arms-struggle perhaps due to neglect from the government and the IOCs after their graduation from the university, while some had in the past undergone special training to understand the workings of oil and gas installations, that’s why they can target any installation and get it blown with little or no resistance from the military.

Thus, the graduation of three ex-Niger Delta militants with a first class degree from universities in the United Kingdom recently should pass a signal to the government that if they take the human capital development of the people of the region, militancy could be curbed at least to the barest minimum.
They are among those sponsored by the federal government under the Niger Delta Amnesty Programme.

The students who were sponsored by the Goodluck Jonathan led federal government, under the Niger Delta Amnesty Programmed are: Nicholas Goodness and Terubein Fawei graduated from the University of Bedfordshire with first class honours in public relations, telecommunication and networking engineering respectively, while Lucky Azibanagein graduated with first class in mechanical engineering and robotic system from the University of Liverpool.

Also it was gathered that eighteen others graduated with second class upper degrees also from UK universities.

In his reaction, the Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Paul Boroh, congratulated the ex-militants, assuring that President Muhammadu Buhari will sustain the amnesty programme.

“President Buhari is ever ready to implement the blueprint upon which the amnesty programme was established.

“The era of impunity and phony contracts are gone for good,” Boroh said.

He also used the opportunity to further callon restive militants to embrace peace.

JAMB revokes list of admissions earlier sent to various institutions of higher learning

JAMB 2016

Report reaching us has it that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has pulled back the list of candidates for admission it previously sent to colleges and other tertiary institutions.

The declaration was contained in an announcement by the representative for JAMB, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, on Sunday in Abuja.

As indicated by him, the choice was to guarantee that colleges play out their statutory obligation of selecting applicants and alluding them to JAMB for affirmation.

This, JAMB expressed, ought to be done in consonance with the admission standards of merit, catchment area and educationally impeded states as coordinated by the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu, during the policy committee meeting.

According to Benjamin the list sent earlier was done with aim of accelerating the admission procedure in order to permit different levels of tertiary institution organise their admission for the 2016/2017 academic session.

He further stated that “Candidates should not panic because this is part of the process of the 2016 admission exercise. JAMB regrets any inconvenience this decision would have caused the tertiary institutions.”

The Registrar/Chief Executive of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, had while issuing the admission conditions for the 2016/2017 academic session, said it would just give endorsement “after appropriate screening of the candidates by the institutions had been done.”

furthermore, he said, "JAMB wishes to state that the latest list of candidates sent to all the tertiary institutions contains candidates who qualified for screening based on the individual institutions’ capacity. It’s not in any way an admission list.

“However, if this list is not sufficient for the need of any institution, such institution can source from the omnibus printout earlier sent to them by the board.

“The public and all tertiary institutions should note that admission will only be approved by the board after appropriate screening of the candidates by the institutions.

“The list which is made up of candidates who met the national cut-off point within the set criteria are sent to the institutions. Again, for purposes of clarity, all institutions that have need for more can source from their omnibus printout as stated above. The candid intention of the board is to ensure that available spaces are adequately utilised.”

According to journalists the Federal Government had cleared up its prohibition on Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and the general admission strategies, saying it “does not in any way affect the statutory role of the senate of any university or the academic board of any tertiary institution conducting its admissions.”

The clarification was made known by Adamu in an announcement by the Deputy Director (Press and Public Relations) in the Federal Ministry of Education, Mr. Ben. Bem-Goong.

While speaking, he stated that the clarification became essential “following conflicting reports in the media over the roles of universities and JAMB in admission under the new dispensation.”

According to his statement, JAMB's duty is to organise the UTME accumulate the list of applicants whose scores meet the cut-off imprints (180 or more) and send same to the institutions.

PTDF SCHOLARS TO SIGN BOND BEFORE TRAVELLING OVERSEAS

PTDF 2016/2017

It is no more business as usual for PTDF overseas scholars as they will be all be made to sign an undertaking to return home after rounding-off their studies abroad.

This information was made known by the Acting Executive Secretary of PTDF, Malam Ahmed Aminu during an induction programme for successful candidates for masters and PhD. Programmes.

According to Aminu, the government is doing this in order to ensure that they get value for every money spent in training Nigerians abroad.

According to him “This year, the fund has introduced a bond form attached to the award letter wherein scholars are expected to fill and return to the fund.

“This is to provide a guarantee that they will come back to serve Nigeria after concluding their respective programmes.’’

He further stressed that the government is sending these beneficiaries to universities in the UK, especially Scotland in order to be sure that the students get quality training in oil and gas sector. And that the t raining programme is being extended to Brazil, France and Germany as well.

“This shows how diverse and vibrant the fund’s approach is becoming. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has already been signed with Brazil and France on May 12 and June 30, respectively, to that effect.

“On the other hand, a MoU is expected to be signed with the German Government later in the year, most likely September,’’ he said.

According to him,  2,417 masters’ degree and 642 doctoral degree students in oil and gas related courses, benefited from the organisation’s overseas programmes between 2007 and 2013.

It was also revealed by Aminu that for 2016/2017 programme, 5,000 candidates were shortlisted, out of whom 210 students were selected for scholarship in MSC and 63 for PHD programmes in Nigerian institutions.

He said that 175 MSC and 80 PHD candidates were selected for overseas scholarship.

“It is worth mentioning that on matters of PHD scholarship award, the fund’s priority is on lecturers.

“This is because the fund wants to make sure that our institutions have the capacity to train our young people.’’ he said.

One of the successful candidate, Mr Kinsley Okechukwu, commended PTDF for selecting him and others for the training “I am happy, reason being that I didn’t know anybody before I applied, and going through the process was transparent, though rigorous,’’ he said.

Also, Ms Sophiat Aribilowo, said that PTDF did the selection based on qualification and merit.

“We were many that were shortlisted but those of us who passed through the requirements were selected; I sincerely appreciate it.

“It was a tough process but it is worth it,’’ she said.
