ARTICLE 50: More Labour MPs to resign following Jeremy Corbyns threat if they do not support the Brexit process on the floor of the house

Jeremy Corbyn

Confusion in Labour Party as Jeremy Corbyn issues strong warning to members of the party that anyone who votes against the invocation of Article 50 may lose his/her position.

So far, the party under the leadership of Corbyn has received resignation letters from two members, as a way of registering their revolt, and it appears, in the coming days more members would tender their resignations.

Mr Corbyn claimed to have stated in clear terms that Article 50 “has to be implemented” however he that maintained the party planned to secure critical amendments.

He told ITV One’s Peston on Sunday : “There was no need for anyone to resign at this stage.

“It’s obviously impossible to carry on being in the shadow cabinet if you vote against a decision made after a very frank and very long discussion of the shadow cabinet earlier this week.”

Jeremy Corbyn’s threat to impose a three-line whip asking MPs to given their support to the Brexit withdrawal process forced Jo Stevens be the first MP to tender her resignation.

Standing down as shadow Welsh secretary, she said Brexit was a ”terrible mistake”.

Sources has it that her resignation followed Tulip Siddiq’s announcement she was quitting as a shadow education minister and two Labour whips – meant to enforce party discipline – indicated they would rebel in next week’s vote.

Labour’s deputy leader Tom Watson said the divisions in the party would be handled sensitively and suggested some of the rebels could be back in senior roles within months.
