Brexit Secretary, David Davis gives his support for softer post-Brexit

David Davis

At last a core Brexiter and Brexit Secretary, David Davis has given a clue of a more friendly approach towards some foreign workers when the United Kingdom exits the EU.

This was made known while making a presentation to the CBI in Cardiff, stated that new immigration laws post Brexit would not be used to destroy the British economy. As it was not in anyone's interest to see labour shortages in key industries.

"As we take back control of immigration by ending free movement as it has operated before, let me also say that we won't do so in a way which is contrary to the national economic interest," he said.

"Because, as the Chancellor has said, Britain must win the global battle for talent.

"No one wants to see labour shortages in key sectors - that won't be in anybody's interest."

This information is coming at a time when it is reported that the number of nationals from other EU countries coming to the UK is on the increase compared to last year’s figure, which is estimated at about 284, 000.

This decision may not be unconnected to some of the industries which have expressed fears that a stiffer immigration policy after Brexit may affect workforce adversely.

Mr Davis has also infuriated some by saying the UK could pay Brussels to stay in the single market after leaving the EU.

According to a Government spokesman: "It is well known that Donald Tusk wanted to change the arrangements for the European Council and this timetable reflects those plans, with a one-day meeting instead of two.

"It is no surprise that the 27 other countries will meet after the European Council.

"Indeed it is recognition that the UK is leaving the EU and that our European partners need to prepare for the negotiations, just as we are, so that we can secure the best outcome for the UK and the EU."
