More knocks
for Buhari as Professor Akintunde Akinwande, whom he nominated as Chairman,
Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, neglected to show up at the
Senate yesterday to screen.
Akinwande
likewise declined to present to the Committee on Power, Steel Development and
Metallurgy, his date of birth, capabilities, specialization, post-graduate
experience and National Youth Service Corps, NYSC. Earlier on, two different people
nominated by the President have likewise dismissed his offer.
Though it is
reported that Akinwande was said to have turned down the designation since he
was not counseled before the declaration. However, some Nigerians are of the
opinion that, these well-meaning Nigerians are declining any appointment from
the current regime of President Buhari due to his gross failure to deliver the
dividends of democracy, and his authoritarian system of administration.
He is not
ready to leave his present businesses to take up the job,’’ a source told
Vanguard, including that Akinwande was doing a venture at Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, MIT.
Akinwande had
likewise neglected to present himself to the Department of State Services, DSS,
for security checks.
Thus,
Chairman of the Committee, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, told newsmen that the
screening wasn't possible without the chairman elect. And deferred the
screening until the Presidency returns to the Senate.
“Regrettably,
when members of the committee assembled to screen the nominees made by
President Buhari, we were told that the chairman designate was unavoidably
absent.
“The
Presidential liaison who brought the nominees informed us that the chairman was
unavoidably absent,” he said.
Abaribe said
the Presidency ought to have known whether the director assign would go to the
screening or not.
"The
commission is indispensable and can't work without a director,'' Abaribe
expressed.
Different
candidates for the NERC board are Sanusi Garuba (Vice Chairman), Nathan R.
Shatti (magistrate), Dr. Moses Arigu (official), Dafe C. Akpeneye (official),
Prof. Straight to the point Okafor (official) and Musiliu O. Oseni
(magistrate).
