A 35-year-old Stephen Ngila has been arrested for allegedly
cutting off the hands of his wife, after blaming her for not bearing children
for him, even though her inability to bear children was due to him being infertile.
The wife, Jackline Mwende accused Mr. Ngila of attacking her
with a machete, which he used to brutally slash her forehead, face and wrists
during the attack.
According to an eye witness, she saw blood covering walls
inside the couple’s home and a detached hand on the kitchen floor, while Mrs
Mwende’s other hand was almost totally severed.
Mrs Mwende stated to LA Times that in 2014 she and her
husband visited a hospital in Nairobi to find out why they have not been able
to bear children. According to her, it was in that medical trip the husband was
told by medical experts that he “had a problem” and was advised to seek help at
a fertility clinic, which he continually refused to do.
Mrs Mwende claims her husband would drink to excess and beat
her, even though she was advised by a local pastor to continue with her
marriage against the wishes of her parents.
The couple met seven years ago and married two years later,
with Mrs Mwende running a small business in Machakos thanks to an investment by
her husband.
Describing the incident, Mrs Mwende said: “I saw him, and he
told me: ‘Today is your last day’. I never thought something like this would
happen to me.
“He was a good man. He was a church man. The first days of
our marriage were happy days. We were living well together as a husband and
wife. But then he was very brutal. He used to beat me.
