Senator Hamman Misau representing Bauchi Central has
criticised his colleagues for revealing confidential issues discussed at
executive sessions to journalists.
His condemnation came as he made reference to Order 43 of
the Senate’s 2015 Standing Rules, saying the senate has the tradition of not
revealing issues discussed at executive session to newsmen.
It was learnt that the alleged plot to impeach President
Buhari started at the executive session of the senate on Tuesday.
Senator Misau asserted that the publications in some
national dailies, with headlines saying “Senate plots to impeach Buhari.”
The senator was so displeased at how some senators
misinformed the public on confidential issues discussed at an executive
session.
Here are some of his expressions:
“Yesterday we were in
an executive meeting and we want to inform Nigerians that executive meetings
are only meant for senators.
“We don’t even allow our aides or the media to be part of
the executive session.
“For this information to come out from the executive
session, it is unfortunate that senators will go out after a session to mislead
the public of something that was never discussed here.
“Unfortunately, some of the senators are here. There was no
time when somebody threatened to impeach Buhari. I was not even given the
privilege to talk in the session.
“Even, the chairman of Committee on Foreign Affairs was not
there and some people went out to mislead the public.
“Even Sahara reporters said me, Peter Nwoboshi, Danjuma Goje
and Jibrin Barau, were supporting someone to insult another person.’’
Senator Misau however admonished law makers to show some
level of maturity in keeping matters discussed in executive session
confidential.
The senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki while speaking said
that the issue would not be debated on, but referred it to the Committee on
Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions.
