A crowd of supporters have been addressed by the Turkish
President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan that the country is still under his control
after a failed coup attempt by soldiers.
However, according to Turkey's prime minister, Binali
Yildirim, 161 people had been killed, and 1,440 wounded.
"The situation is completely under control," he
said in Ankara, while being surrounded by senior ministers and Turkey's top
general.
Moreover, the attempted coup, has led to the arrest of 2,839
military personnel after group called Council for Peace in the Homeland
declared martial law and curfew.
Mr Yildirim said those detained included ordinary soldiers
and high-ranking officers.
The Turkish military's acting chief of staff, General Umit
Dundar, revealed that those who took part in the uprising were from the air
force, the gendarmerie, and what he called "armoured elements".
Mr Yildirim said the coup had led to the death of 20
plotters while 30 had been wounded.
He further stressed that though Turkey did not have the
death penalty, legal changes would be considered to make sure such an event did
not happen again.
