POST BREXIT: Liam Fox claims the EU will gain more if Britain is allowed to be part of the single market

Liam Fox

Liam Fox, the International Trade Secretary has emphasized that allowing Britain to participate in the EU single market will be more profitable to other EU countries than it will be to the UK. This is because, according to him, EU countries make more imports to the UK than the UK imports to EU countries.

Responding to questions after a “major” speech in Manchester, Dr Fox suggested Britain could maintain the benefits of the single market post-Brexit.

“Protectionism never actually helps anybody at all and as we move into a post-Brexit arena, we want it to be as free and as open as possible,” he said.

“And don’t just look at it from the UK perspective, the European Union has a massive surplus in goods with the UK.

“Who does it harm more if we end up in a new tariff environment?

“Does it harm more those who sell more to the UK, or the UK?

“It’s in everybody’s interests that, as we move forward, that we have at least as free a trading environment as we have today.

“Everything else may not harm the politicians and institutions but it will harm the people of Europe, and it’s the people of Europe who should be at the forefront of our thoughts during that period.”

Nigeria doctor practising in Canada suspended for six months with $75k fine for s*xual comments made to his patients

Nigerian Doctor in Canada

Report has it that a Nigerian medical doctor identified as Dr. Adekunle Williams-Owolabi who lives in Canada has had his licence revoked for a period of 6 months in the wake of making sexual remarks to patients at his facility in Labrador West.

The doctor’s permit was suspended and he was requested to pay the whole of $75,000 towards the expenses of holding the hearing where he was discovered blameworthy of ethical offense towards patients which is against the ethics of the profession.

A board set up by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador in St. Johns settled on the choice to suspend the permit of the doctor on Monday.

As indicated by CBC News, an instructor, Arlene Johnson, who go to Owolabi's facility, affirmed that he made some sexual remarks amid a pelvic examination.

According the lady, after the test, he had embraced her and whispered in her ear, “You have a beautiful cl*t, does your husband tell you that?”

Similarly, another complainant additionally affirmed that Owolabi made improper remarks while looking at her pelvic.

She said Owolabi asked, “Do you like big ones or small ones?”

According to the lady the remarks was made to her when she was pregnant, uncovered starting from the waist and her feet in stirrups, while two female secretaries in the room viewed.

The board said that Owolabi's wrong remarks and touching of patients demonstrated an absence of appreciation for their decency and safety. Accordingly, it taught him to have a chaperone present at whatever point he sees female patients in the following two years and subsequent to coming back to therapeutic practice.

Owolabi, who confessed to embracing one of the patients, however denied making such remarks towards the lady. His legal counsellor, Paul Stokes, said they were frustrated in the board set up to investigate the matter for settling on the choice.

In spite of the fact that the specialist has 30 days to plea the board's choice in court, Stokes said that he and his customer had not chosen on the off chance that they would go on with any appeal.

The board set up an example of conduct after four previous patients of Owolabi held up the charges of expert offense. They affirmed before the tribunal that his activities extended from making sexual remarks to improper touching and kissing at his center.

Is the naira now a mere paper under this current Buhari led APC government?

Forex

With the continuous depreciation of the naira, Nigerians from all segments of the economy and regions are now wondering why the much publicised 'yaun/naira' deal has not made any significant impact?

As Naira went under new weights in the black market Wednesday, the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, issued more mandates limiting utilization of domiciliary bank accounts by bank clients, evidently to stem the weights and enhance official supply of outside trade to the interbank market.

As an aftereffect of the weight, Naira collided to around N460 and N465/USD1, against the opening rate of N445/USD1 in the black market, however the interbank rate devalued only imperceptibly to N312.9/USD1, against N310 prior in the week.

Cash merchants from the official and black market segment of the business sector credited the repeated weight on rates to a declining supply hole at all the fragments, even as CBN's mediation, as indicated by them, has turned out to be too thin to mollify the immense demand.

According to one of the merchants in a commercial bank: “CBN may have started finding it difficult to intervene with significant supply of foreign currency to the interbank market.

“On the other hand we have been having increased demand from our customers but we are unable to source their requirements for some weeks now.”

Against the setting of the gigantic free market activity hole, CBN seemed to have rejuvenated its limitation measures on access and utilization of autonomous foreign exchange assets.

Recently, some bank clients said they had gotten messages from their banks cautioning them to stop from utilizing foreign exchange inflows as a part of their domiciliary bank accounts purpose of trading.

The orders, as indicated by a source in a bank, came against the rise of a flourishing cash exchange by a few people with their domiciliary bank accounts.

According to the e-mail, the guidelines stated: “All customers of financial institutions are expected to only use their accounts for their direct personal/company related transactions.

“No customer of any financial institution is permitted to engage in any activity that could be perceived as international money remittance service (IMTO) or bureau de change (BDC) activities without the express approval of the CBN.

“Any customer who fails to adhere to these guidelines runs the risk of being reported not only to the CBN but subsequently to the security agencies.’’

A portion of the banks' record officers who addressed Vanguard trusted the CBN bank would catch up this order with more stringent control of access and utilization of domiciliary records.

Also a financial expert at CardinalStone Partners Limited said: “There is no liquidity yet in the foreign exchange market and the situation is worsening. We need emergency borrowings, foreign exchange inflows as soon as yesterday.

“The forex is not available at the interbank market and that is why the demands are going into the parallel market and hence the rate there is shooting up.”

Nigerian government outlines conditions for sale of its national assets against the popular will of the masses

Buhari and national assets

As a result of the call to sell some of Nigeria’s national assets by business mogul Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President Buhari’s government has decided to dispose the federal government’s share in most of the asset which are yet to be revealed.

Though well-meaning Nigerians from different part of the country is strongly advising Buhari against making such decision as, it may practically not be in the interest of the common man, President Buhari’s body language so far seem to be adamant to such advices from other professionals and seasoned economist.

Some have even said, if what they claimed with respect to all the recovered loots, and savings from the TSA is true which runs into several trillions, then there is absolutely no need to take such a risk that may further impoverish the masses in favour of the elites.

So far, report reaching us has it that the Federal Government has listed some conditions, that may lead to the disposal of such national assets. One of such condition is the insertion of a clause which may empower the government to re-buy the sold assets when the economy improves.

But the questions Nigerians are asking, is does anything ever reverses to favour the masses? Because over so many decades, government usually bring untold hardship true policies that do not favour the general masses, which never reverses back to the status quo even when things get better globally. Thus Nigerians have found it extremely difficult to trust the government, more so, the current government which many say came into power with numerous mouth-watering promises that they have failed to deliver, with one excuse after the other, with the blame game being the hallmark of this current regime.

According to a presidential source: “The Federal Government has no plan to sell off its shares outright in the LNG, where it owns 49% shares. The balance of 51% is owned by private foreign interests.

“The Federal Government doesn’t own the entire gas company and will certainly not sell off its entire shares, but it’s open to the possibility of selling down its 49% ownership by 5% or thereabout.”

With regard to repurchase clause, he said: “Just as in other potential asset sales, there would be a repurchase option that guarantees the Federal Government’s opportunity to buy back any such assets if circumstances change anytime in the future.

“Some of the intended sales could be in form of time-bound leases, advance renewal payments on leasing licences and concessioning which would attract buoyant signature fees.

“If we even want to sell down certain assets, while our target is to get foreign currency, specifically dollars, the option would also be opened to Nigerians at some point to buy limited shares through the Nigeria Stock Exchange.”

The presidential source further said that one of the concession deal almost finished is the East-West lines of the Nigeria Railways, with the General Electric-GE-being the concessionaire.

The source said the global giant would invest $2 billion in the economy, including for the refurbishment of the single-gauge lane of the lines that have been largely left idle for years.

“GE under the deal, is expected to hire back some of the laid off staff of Nigeria Railways and also open a Transport University in Nigeria while building/assembling train coaches in the country.

“Federal Government would also receive a signature fee in foreign currency as it would in other assets that might be concessioned.

“The important thing to keep in mind is that the sales down of some of the assets is an option to raise the much-needed dollars at a critical time for the Nigerian economy”.

“Nigerians can be sure that there would be no shady deal, considering the character of the Nigerian leadership at this time”, the source said.

40-year-old Deaf and deaf man charged to court for raping a 6-year-old baby in Yobe State, Nigeria

How heartless people can be to their fellow human beings, not minding even their own pity state. This came as the a 40-year-old deaf and dumb man identified as Shaaibu Dandadi of Yobe State in Nigerian s3xually molested a 6-month-old baby in Potiskum.

The NSCDC commandant, who condemned the expanding instances of s3xual assault, foulness and breach of trust in the state, stressed that medicinal report showed that the baby got her private part ruptured down to her rear-end, which could result in the baby having difficulties in passing wastes.

Though it was further said that the infant was experiencing therapeutic treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

He further stressed that the command had charged a few suspects to court for flouting segments 283, 285 and 312 of the Penal Code.

He said, “The case no: YBS/PT/CMCII/091c/2016 suffered setback due to lack of a sign language expert at the court to communicate with the deaf and dumb suspect.” He also state that similar assault cases were additionally recorded in Damaturu, with the suspects charged in a Magistrates' Court in Damaturu.

Fari said the command captured and charged numerous individuals for claimed criminal plot and criminal rupture of trust in Damaturu, Potiskum and Nangere.

Former President Jonathan finally exposes President Buahri

Buhari and Jonathan

President Buhari blame  game seem to be getting out of hand as most of the accusations are being seen as baseless and does not portray the true person and achievements of the previous administration of Ex-President Jonathan.

The latest blame game which was made by President Buhari during his recent trip to the US as the former President according to report could not withstand the numerous lies of the already failed Buhari’s government, which has inflicted untold hardship to Nigerians from all sectors and regions. Buhari again lied that his administration inherited a failed system with no power, roads, railway to mention but a few.

According to the president, “We got into trouble as a country because we did not save for the rainy day. For example, between 1999 and 2015 when we produced an average of 2.1 million barrels of oil per day, and oil prices stood at an average of $100 per barrel, we did not save, neither did we develop infrastructure. Suddenly, when we came in 2015, oil prices fell to about $30 per barrel.

“I asked, ‘Where are the savings?’ There were none. ‘Where are the railways, the roads, the power?’ None. I further asked, ‘What did we do with billions of dollars that we made over the years?’ They said we bought food. Food with billions of dollars? I did not believe, and still do not believe.”

Contrarily, former president Jonathan debunked Buhari’s false accusation against him, when he said he was very proud of the various strides achieved by his regime which includes the rail project being commissioned by the Buhari’s administration as it was one of his administration’s legacy.

Jonathan, in a Facebook post, made reference to a piece composed by a previous PUNCH journalist, Tolu Ogunlesi, which was distributed on January 12, 2015.

According to the former president, “I am grateful to God and my team for what we were able to achieve with our railways, among other things.”

Ogunlesi, who is now the Special Assistant on Digital/New Media to President Buhari, had applauded Jonathan's accomplishments in a piece entitled, ‘The case for and against President Jonathan.’

Jonathan while making the Facebook post quoted Ogunlesi’s piece verbatim, “Let’s start with infrastructure. On the railways, the Jonathan government scores high marks. The railway line between Lagos and Kano has been revived after about two decades of inactivity.

“The Enugu-Port Harcourt line has just been launched; Abuja-Kaduna is almost finished. There was a determined push to upgrade airports across the country, for which we are grateful.”

BREAKING NEWS: Fire on the mountain as Tinubu want Oyegun to resign with immediate effect

Tinubu and Oyegun

It is a popular adage that “a house divided against itself cannot stand”.

Reporting reaching us has it that the All Progressives Congress, APC, national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has requested for the resignation of the national chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun with immediate effect.

Tinubu’s media office made the announcement on Sunday when Oyegun was blamed for disrupting the peoples will in Ondo State by superseding the choice of the appeal panel that requested a new governorship primary after examinations that demonstrated that the delegate list used had been altered.

Michael Olusegun Abraham, a competitor for the governorship ticket of the APC in Ondo State, had in an announcement at the weekend communicated dissatisfaction at Oyegun over the continuous rise of a previous President of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, as applicant.

Read below details of Tinubu’s statements:
“The APC, a party born of the quest for democratic good governance, is under critical threat by those who managed to be in the party but never of it. From the party’s inception, the principles of democratic fairness and justice were to guide APC internal deliberations. Party founders realized that only by intramural fair dealing could the party remain faithful to the progressive ideals that we presented to the Nigerian electorate as our governing creed. If the party could not justly govern itself, it would find it difficult to establish and maintain just government throughout the nation.

“In essence, the party was the embodiment of a democratic promise made between its members as well as a democratic vow made to the public. Evidently, some errant members believe promises and vows are mere words to be easily spoken and more easily broken. Chairman John Oyegun has breached these good pledges in a most overt and brazen display. In doing so, Oyegun has dealt a heavy blow to the very party he professes to lead. It is an awful parent who suffocates his own child for the sake of a few naira. The party was supposed to buttress APC members elected to government at all levels. Because of Oyegun’s conduct of our affairs, the party is rapidly becoming an albatross to those it was meant to help.

“Oyegun’s comportment regarding the Ondo State primary will become the textbook definition of political treachery and malfeasance of the basest order. In early September, the state primary was held. A purported winner was named. Having faith in the ways of the party, Tinubu publicly accepted what he assumed to be a verdict honestly derived. As a democrat, one must face the possibility of defeat and accept such as outcome with as much grace as one would embrace victory. One of the few bright spots during the conduct of the primaries was Jigawa Governor, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar. He chaired the primary convention with decorum and impartiality. He was unaware that a tampered list had been slipped into the process.

“Indeed within hours of the announcement, news began to filter in that gravely disturbed me. Credible allegations of fraud troubled the waters. The delegate list had been materially altered by someone in a strategic position to so do. The names of over 150 valid delegates were excised to make room for an equal number of impostors. This was not a clerical error. The alteration was wilfully executed that the primary would be directed toward a chosen end that bore nothing in common with the will of most state party members. A cunning few had tried to deceive the many into believing they were outnumbered. “A conspiracy to steal the Ondo primary had been uncovered.

“Fortunately, the grand deception afoot had been unable to cover its tracks fast enough. Truth began to cry for justice. Several candidates filed petitions contesting the result. The party established an investigative board to review the evidence. In a two to one decision, the panel found the delegate roster had suffered tampering. The panel recommended that a new primary should be held using the valid delegate list. This recommendation was tabled before the National Working Committee (NWC).

“After many hours of deliberations spanning several days, a final vote was held by the NWC. Before hand, NWC members agreed that the decision of the majority would become the stance of the party. Such is the way of democracy. The NWC voted six against five to cancel the fraudulent results and hold an honest primary. For a moment, it seemed the party would restore its integrity by giving democracy a chance. However, those who sought to scam an entire state would not let the vote of 11 people spoil their enterprise.

“After the NWC vote, a noticeably agitated Chairman Oyegun proposed the NWC engage in prayer before concluding the meeting. Adhering to this chairman’s request, NWC members began to pray. Seeing that the others had taken his bait, Oyegun used the prayerful interlude to secretly excuse himself from the meeting. Contravening the NWC decision and in violation of all rules of fundamental decency, Oyegun decided to safeguard the fraud done in Ondo by perpetrating a greater fraud. Oyegun arrogated to himself the right to submit the name of Rotimi Akeredolu to INEC as the candidate of the party.

“Truth has finally come to light. There exists a regressive element in the party that cares nothing for the progressive ideas upon which this party was founded. They joined the APC because it was the best ride available at the time. Now they want to guide the party into the ditch. They want to turn the party into a soulless entity incapable of doing good, just like they are. When such a person tastes power, they shed all good restraint. They come to abuse the trust given them as if they are the owners of that trust and not its mere custodians. These people did little to build the party but now will do much to wreck it.

“Our party was to stand for change. Oyegun and his fellows seem to be on a different wave length. They are the cohort of Unchange. The APC wants to guide Nigeria into a better tomorrow. Oyegun and the cohort of unchange want to pull Nigeria back into the past where rigging and vote stealing were the old and new testaments of politics. They want the people to think that there is no alternative to their reactionary system of skewed politics and imperious government.

“Thus, they seek to turn the APC into a factory of the very political malpractices the people soundly rejected in the past election. To choke the APC in this manner is to kill the chance for progressive reform for the foreseeable future. Much more than the Ondo primary is at stake. Oyegun has revealed his team’s game plan: It is the destruction of progressive politics and governance on behalf of the people.

“As party chairman, Oyegun was supposed to protect our internal processes and be an impartial arbiter, a person in whom all had confidence. Instead, he donned the garment of a confident man, duping the NWC, the party, and INEC in one fell blow. He has robbed APC members in Ondo State of the chance to pick in a fair manner who they believe is the best candidate.

“As such, he has broken faith with the party and probably has broken a few laws. The consequences of what he has done are more expansive than a man of his scope can fathom,” Tinubu said as he said that Oyegun must have been under some major sinister influence as to allow what happened. “With strong expectation, we await a response to Oyegun’s wrongdoing from those who clamored so long and loudly about Tinubu’s alleged role in the Ondo primary.

“Leading into the primary, a prominent lawyer from Ondo published lengthy missives alleging that Tinubu was a malicious hand intent on rigging the primary. His letters spoke of his great love for democracy and justice. Though Oyegun has assaulted democracy in a most public and vulgar way, this lawyer’s prolific pen will remain stilled. He dare not publish a word about this travesty. His silence will be sign for all who care to decipher its meaning.

“The plan was to point the accusing finger at Tinubu. With everyone focused on Tinubu, they would have distracted all attention from the heist they had set in motion. As fate would have it, the trickery they hoped to conduct in the shadows has come to light.

“Those who so actively attributed imaginary wrong to Tinubu now stand dumb and mute in the face of confirmed impropriety. They remain silent for reasons they cannot divulge. Oyegun and his ilk turn out to be gangsters adorned in the tunic of party authority.

“Oyegun has engaged in the strange math where five is greater than six. This smacks of how the PDP conducted its affairs and orchestrated its own downfall. Tinubu disparaged such malpractice when it was not in his party. Tinubu surely disowns it now that it has invaded the party he helped bring to fruition.

“Tinubu has consciously refused to hold any official position with the party to avoid the perception that he was trying to control all and sundry. Tinubu has even kept his peace for some time despite many things that happened within the party that were not quite right. He exercised this forbearance because the party is young. A collective endeavor cannot avoid the mistakes and errors of organizational newness and evolution.

“Yet, the wrongs Oyegun committed had nothing to do with newness or the mistakes occasioned by the path of reform. His actions are in the nature of the old wrongs that have afflicted our national politics much too long. If Oyegun wants to walk backward into the past, he has every right to it. However, he has no right to drag the party or any of us with him. Against our choosing.

“The informal title of national leader of the party was given to Tinubu at the onset which he accepted it as a sign from those who wished to recognize my contributions to the party’s formation. It is an honorific title which he has been proud to wear until today. I would rather not have any title yet reside in a party that honors democracy than hold a title in a party that says it honors me but that treats justice with indecency. I find greater honour and comfort where democracy and fairness are found and respected.

“Oyegun has done the irredeemable. His coup is an insult to party and to patriot, to reason and to the reform agenda of this government. To remain silent would be to admit the defeat of the reform and progressive change many have labored to bring forth. While the forces resistant to change and reform are strong, Tinubu dare not submit to them. Tinubu encourages all party members not to submit to them. If we acquiesce in this wrong, the one greater than this shall cascade upon us.

“Oyegun’s transgressions are a warning. He is but the mercenary of forces that seek to return the nation to the old ways. If they get away with this infraction, no telling what or whom they will undermine tomorrow. Much is at stake. On the chopping block, lies the future of the political party in which the majority of voters had placed their confidence. To rescue the party, Oyegun must go. He has shown that he and democratic fair play cannot exist in the same party at the same time.

“If Tinubu is to choose between John Oyegun and progress toward a better Nigeria, the choice has already been made. For those who care about the party, who care about Nigeria and its chance for a better tomorrow, now is the time to stand against this brewing evil before it grows to encompass all we have built and all we hold dear.”

TROUBLE LOOMS: As PENGASSAN threaten industrial action if President Buhari goes on with the call by Northerners to sale off the country's national assets

PENGASSAN

As a result of the purported plan to sell the national assets of Nigeria to some Muslim Northern cabals as grand plot to take indirectly take over the major economic hub of the country, using the current recession as an excuse to execute their strategy, there is the likelihood that there will be series of industrial actions and other forms of civil disobedience to force the current administration which has inflicted untold hardship on Nigerians.

Thus, report reaching us has it that the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has debilitated to go on strike if the Federal Government offers national resources for sale.

The union's Public Relations' Officer, Mr Emmanuel Ojugbana, made this known in an announcement in Lagos, where he prompted the administration not to offer the assets in light of a legitimate concern for Nigerians.

Lately, calls were made by some Northerners with Alhaji Dangote leading the call for the sale of the assets to cushion financial retreat

Ojugbana depicted the moves as unpatriotic, saying that the deal would add more hardship to Nigerians.

He said that it wasn't right to tackle the nation's transient financial issue by giving over aggregate common treasure to a couple of people.

“We will not watch our national assets sold, especially those in the oil and gas industry such as NLNG that has become a huge revenue earner for Nigeria; refineries and shares in the upstream oil and gas JV operations.

“Any attempt to sell these assets will be resisted as PENGASSAN will ensure that every activity in the oil and gas sector is brought to a halt,” he held.
